UK - Employees at mobile phone operator T-Mobile may become the latest to take industrial action after it was revealed that "outrageous" plans to close parts of the company's final salary scheme might extend beyond the headquarters at Borehamwood.
Some 150 employees have already been redesignated from Deutsche Telekom-owned T-Mobile to another subsidiary, T-Mobile Systems, and have lost their final salary pensions as a result. No other aspects of the employment contracts are believed to have been altered.
General secretary of trade union Amicus, Roger Lyons, said that staff at T-Mobile - formerly known as One-2-One - had not ruled out strike action following evidence that T-Mobile plans to divide-up its 1500-strong headquarters in a bid to gradually close its final salary scheme, and could extend this move beyond Borehamwood.
“The feeling at Borehamwood is that the company is going to try and break up the entire 1500 on the site into different companies and that would enable them to do the same thing with each unit,” said Lyons.
When asked if employees had ruled out industrial action, he added: “Not at all. In fact I believe that this is now a number one priority... . They realise that if they don’t defend the scheme that they have they are hardly likely to be offered it again in the future. We are going for a tough fight here, so provided that the workforce stands together there is no way T-Mobile can operate without a computer system.”
Currently, Amicus is holding talks with German trade unionists on the supervisory board at Deutsche Telekom
A spokeswoman for T-Mobile said that the company had no intention of slashing its final salary scheme elsewhere or dividing the HQ into separate units.
T-Mobile has a combined UK workforce of 6000 in the UK. The Borehamwood site houses its commercial financial and IT operations.
