US - The $23bn Illinois Teachers' Retirement System (TRS) has named Charles Self as its new chief investment officer (CIO), effective from December 1.
Prior to his appointment at the Illinois TRS, Self was senior vice president and director of the investment portfolio department at ABN AMRO North America. Before that, he was vice president, fixed income portfolio manager for CSI Asset Management of Chicago.
Self's appointment brings an end to Illinois’ long running search for a new CIO. Earlier in the year, the fund lost both its executive director and CIO when Keith Bozarth and Mark Caplinger left their respective positions.
Until the arrival of Self and Jon Bauman as executive director, Caplinger's deputy, Kim Pollit, held both positions.
