Railways scheme member data stolen

A laptop containing Railways Pension Scheme confidential member data has been stolen from external auditors Deloitte.

Administrators Rpmi was informed of the data loss following the theft in September. Deloitte was the firm’s external auditor until two months ago.

Deloitte has confirmed the laptop contained some personal information regarding some of the members of the Railways Pension Scheme, the Network Rail Defined Contribution Scheme, the British Transport Police Force Superannuation Fund, British Railways Superannuation Fund and the BR (1974) Fund.

However, the data did not contain bank account details.

Client services director David Maddison said: "We realise the potentially serious nature of any such data loss and have contacted members that may be affected."

The laptop was protected by a number of security measures, including passwords. Deloitte has information security policies in place, which include guidelines for their employees to ensure they pay close attention to their laptops when in public places.

Nevertheless, Deloitte regret this theft has occurred and have asked Rpmi to extend their apologies to those affected.

Rpmi said it is working closely with Deloitte to help ensure a speedy resolution to this issue.

Deloitte "believe the risk of unauthorised access to any data is low due to the opportunistic nature of the theft and the security measures in place".
