US - Marsh & McLennan Companies (MMC) has appointed Scott Gilbert to the newly created position of senior vice president and chief compliance officer of the company.
Gilbert was named to the post one day after a senior executive of Marsh pleaded guilty to criminal charges in connection with an ongoing investigation of fraud and bid rigging in insurance industry led by the attorney general Eliot Spitzer.
Gilbert's appointment is effective January 24, 2005 and he will be responsible for supervising and implementing MMC's compliance policies and programs on a global basis. He will report to Michael Cherkasky, president and chief executive officer of MMC.
He joins MMC from the General Electric Company (GE), where he was chief compliance counsel.
Prior to joining GE in 1992, Gilbert served for five and a half years as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Southern District of New York, where he conducted a broad range of prosecutions, including RICO and securities fraud trials, and served on the Securities and Commodities Fraud Task Force investigating criminal violations of federal securities laws.
