Providing a pension scheme without additional support and financial education is "becoming insufficient", Scottish Widows warns.
The provider's Workplace Pensions Report found 41% of large business employees would like to receive help on how to budget for their old age - with 23% saying employers should pay for full independent financial advice.
Scottish Widows corporate pensions senior manager Lynn Graves said: "Our research is showing that providing a workplace pension alone is becoming insufficient and employees are increasingly looking to employers to provide additional support and financial education to ensure that their staff are not only aware of the mechanics of auto-enrolment, but also making the most of workplace saving to secure a more comfortable retirement."
However those working for smaller businesses thought individuals should increase their own contributions or be reminded to do so by their employer.
Only 27% thought it was up to employers to provide budgeting advice.
The research is based on a survey carried out online by YouGov, which interviewed a total of 5,191 adults between the 31 March and 8 April 2015.
