More than 200 professional trustees have received full accreditation from the Association of Professional Pension Trustees (APPT) since the course opened in April.
While the APPT also began offering an interim step of provisional accreditation in light of the coronavirus pandemic, in a progress update issued today (8 October) it confirmed 209 trustees are now fully accredited.
APPT chairwoman Nita Tinn said: "I am delighted that so many professional pension trustees have come forward to become APPT accredited, despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.
"APPT accreditation is recognised by the industry as the market-leading standard for professional trustees, and we continue to encourage all members of the professional pension trustee community to become accredited."
The announcement comes after the Pensions Management Institute (PMI) launched a separate accreditation regime in February and accredited its first trustee in April. The PMI's Aptitude programme has so far accredited 34 trustees.
Professional trustees can choose to be accredited by either and both regimes follow the standards published by the Professional Trustee Standards Working Group in 2019.
Trustees need to pass both a number of background checks in addition to both units of the PMI's Level 3 Certificate in Pension Trusteeship (CPT). They also need to demonstrate their competency through passing exams covering technical and soft skills, and demonstrate that they are fit and proper through criminal record and professional reference checks.
