Obituary: Andrew Warwick-Thompson

Andrew Warwick-Thompson has died after a battle with cancer.

An announcement on LinkedIn said Andrew had passed away on 19 August. He had been suffering from a rare cancer, peritoneal mesothelioma, which had been diagnosed last summer.
The statement said: "Andrew approached the illness with tremendous dignity; his foremost concern throughout was the welfare and needs of his wife and two sons. About a month before his death, he was made an Honorary Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, which gave him very visible pleasure and a well-deserved sense of pride in a long career."

Before his illness, Warwick-Thompson held various non-executive roles – including being chair of the Scottish Widows Master Trust; a professional trustee at Capital Cranfield Trustees; and the independent chair of MyCSP.

His career began in the late 1980s training as a lawyer before joining actuarial firm Duncan C Fraser and then moving to Bacon & Woodrow (now Aon), where he became an equity partner in 1997.

Warwick-Thompson joined The Pensions Regulator in 2013 as executive director for regulatory policy, leaving to become chief executive of Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) pool LGPS Central in 2017, a post which he left in 2019 to begin his non-executive career.

Tributes to Andrew have poured in from around the pensions industry – with friends and colleagues remembering him as "a man of tremendous integrity"; an "amazing advocate for the members on his watch as well as an innovator in the industry"; someone with "a great mind"; and a "great thinker with a passion for making a real difference".

Others spoke of Andrew being a "kind and thoughtful colleague"; an "exceptional person, colleague and professional"; and "a warm and friendly colleague and insightful industry thinker".

Professional Pensions would like to pass on our condolences to Andrew's family as well as to his many friends and colleagues within the pensions sector.

Friends and colleagues who would like details of Andrew's funeral arrangements have been asked to send a direct message to Andrew's LinkedIn account, including their email address in their message.
