Pensions lawyer John Quarrell has passed away after a long battle with dementia.

Quarrell, who died on Saturday (15 August), was for many years a partner and head of pensions at Nabarro Nathanson, the law firm that is now part of CMS, and spearheaded many high-profile cases, including the long-running battle between British Airways Pension Scheme members and the airline giant over the use of scheme surplus.

He was also heavily involved with the complex legal aftermath and recovery operations following Robert Maxwell's 1991 pension fraud and did a huge amount of work for those who lost out following the near-collapse of Equitable Life in 2000.

Quarrell was instrumental in the founding and early life of the Association of Pension Lawyers, an organisation which he chaired in the early 1990s, and was heavily involved in the National Association of Pension Funds, the body now known as Pensions UK, where he served as a council member.

He was also a long-serving supporter and council member of the Pensions Management Institute, a regular contributor to the pension press and author of a number of publications, including the hugely influential The Law of Pension Fund Investment.

In later life, he established Quarters with his partner Susan Beaumont.

Figures from across the industry have paid tribute to Quarrell on LinkedIn. Funeral details can be obtained from John's daughter, Helen. She can be reached via LinkedIn.
