UK - Suffolk County Council has paid out an extra 43.6% on top of firefighters' basic salaries to cover pensions costs.
And the annual accounts of the county council for the year to April also reveal that the cost of these pensions has risen from £2.89m in 2002 to £3.05m.
Firefighters themselves have to pay 11% of their salaries towards their unfunded pension scheme – but can retire at an earlier age then most other local government workers.
